On February 27, 2009, President Barack Obama, Honorary Chairman of the American Red Cross, signed a Presidential Proclamation marking March 2009 as "Red Cross Month" encouraging all Americans to support this humanitarian organization. Each year the President of the United States proclaims March "Red Cross Month" giving the American Red Cross an opportunity to recognize the vital services that help save millions of lives. American Red Cross of the National Capital Area's mission is to help the people of our community prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters or other life-threatening emergencies that may be local, state-wide, national or international in nature. Although our Chapter comprises of over 100 staff members, we cannot continue fulfilling our mission without over 4,000 dedicated volunteers who give of their time. Together, staff members and volunteers support the Chapter and help the community by teaching health and safety courses, rotating 24-hour-duty shifts as Disaster Action Team members responding to local disasters 365 days a year, welcoming home wounded U.S. service men and women returning to the United States, participating in community partnerships and events to help educate people in emergency preparedness, assist in fundraising events and so much more! Our volunteers work in a variety of services such as Community, Disaster, International, Education & Training, Military and Blood.
