Joyce Anderson became involved with the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina. During Katrina she deployed to Louisiana with the Maryland Medical Defense Force as a Nurse. She said, “That was when I saw the Red Cross in action.” After that experience she felt compelled to join.
Joyce is a member of the Disaster Action Team, and has responded to several disasters in Montgomery County, Maryland. On April 20, 2011 she joined a team of 16 Red Cross volunteers from the National Capital Region to deploy to North Carolina. The volunteers are currently providing the following services to those affected by the devastating tornadoes: outreach to remote communities, case management, disaster health services and comfort and care.
Joyce shared, “When you participate in things like these it really changes your life forever. I enjoy just being there for other people. I am looking forward to helping people and to inspire them to move forward with their lives. The great thing is that they are still alive.”
