Lightning Safety Awareness

Summer begins in June and thunderstorms and lightning are very common during this season. A number of people die from lightning strikes annually, and hundreds of others experience permanent injury. Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 21 - 27. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), deaths by lightning strikes in 2008, 32% took place under a tree and 29% on water. Take the time to prepare yourself and your family to enjoy the summer safely. Know what to do when: a storm is approaching; you're caught outside during a storm; the storm has passed; someone is struck by lightning.
